Post what you paid this week. I will keep the spreadsheet

Starting this because I already keep the file for myself and it may as well be useful. Format I am asking for: rough area, what type of thing, the size, what you actually paid including tax, and the week. No shop names, that is not what this is for and I am not looking to review anybody. What I want is a picture of the spread across the state, because I suspect it is much wider than people assume and I would like to know if I am the only one paying what I am paying. I will post a tidied version back to this thread every couple of weeks. If you spot me making an error in the maths, please say so loudly.

The testing difference is the part nobody explains well

I want to be careful here because this is the sort of topic where people overstate things fast, and I am not going to make a claim about safety that I cannot back up. But the piece I never see explained clearly is what testing actually involves and what it does and does not cover. Most of what I read is either an advert leaning on the word tested without saying anything, or a scare story with no documentation attached. Neither of those helps someone trying to make an ordinary decision, and both are apparently very effective, which is the frustrating part. So my question is whether there is a plain, boring, official explanation of what is required to be tested and what the results mean. Not marketing, not somebody assurance in a comment. I would rather read the dull version and understand it properly.

Honest question: what would actually make you switch to a licensed shop

I mean this as a real question rather than a scolding. I hear a lot about how people should use the legal ones, and much less about what would actually change somebody habits. So I am asking the people who mostly do not: what is it? My guesses in order are price, distance, and habit, probably in that order, and maybe the fact that the place you have been going to for years already knows you. Whether those are the real reasons is not for me to say, which is why I am asking rather than telling. No lectures in the replies please, from either side. I am trying to understand it, not settle it.

Home grow in a one bedroom apartment. Is this realistic or am I dreaming

Situation: one bedroom, two roommates, and calling the layout compact is generous. I am not asking whether I am allowed to, I am asking whether it is physically sensible in a space this size, and whether the people who share it with me are going to hate me for it. The two things I keep coming back to are smell and electricity. I have read that both are manageable and I have also read that both are the reason people quit after one attempt, and I cannot tell which of those is the honest answer. Also I have no window that gets real sun. If anyone has done this in an actual small city apartment rather than a spare room, I want the unglamorous version. Including if the answer is that I should not bother.

First indoor run in a Rochester basement: what I got wrong

Wrapped up my first proper indoor attempt and I kept notes the whole way, mostly so I could be honest with myself about the mistakes. There were plenty and none of them were exotic. Biggest one was humidity. A Rochester basement is a damp room pretending to be a dry room, and I did not respect that until it was a problem I had to solve in a hurry rather than one I had planned for. Second was overwatering out of anxiety, which every single guide warns about and I did anyway, because reading a warning and internalising it are different things. Third was that I moved too many variables at once, so when things improved I could not tell you which change did it. Next run I am changing one thing at a time and writing down the numbers daily instead of when I remember. Happy to share the notes if that is useful to anyone starting in a similar space.

the price difference between two shops eight blocks apart is insane

two places. eight blocks. same afternoon, same thing, and the gap was big enough that i went back and checked i had not misread the tag. i had not. i keep being told this is rent, taxes, volume, whatever. maybe. but eight blocks is the same rent, roughly the same everything, and the difference was not small change. at some point the explanation has to be that one of them just decided it could. what i want to know is whether this is a city thing or if the rest of you see the same spread. no names in here, just numbers, i am not trying to start anything.

I read the last board meeting so you do not have to

I do this most months and figured it belonged here. I sat down with the agenda and the materials from the most recent meeting and took notes, and I am going to link the documents rather than characterise them, because my summary is not the record and I would rather you read the record. Two things stood out to me. Several items are procedural in a way that sounds boring and is not, because procedure is how a timeline slips by a quarter without anyone announcing a delay. And a couple of items got moved without much comment, which is worth watching in the next set of materials rather than reading anything into now. I am not going to tell you what any of this means for the rules where you live, because I would be guessing and I am not qualified to guess. If you want a specific item pulled out and linked, name it and I will find it.

Driving between counties with it in the car: what is the actual rule

genuine confusion, not looking for a loophole. i am in the car constantly, different county most weekends, trailhead to trailhead. so there is a thing i do not understand: what is the correct way to have it with you in a vehicle here. sealed? trunk? does the county i started in matter, or the one i end up in? everything i find online is either a lawyer ad or somebody very confident in a comment section, and those two sources disagree. i would rather be boringly careful than confidently wrong, so i am asking. if someone can point me to where this is actually written down rather than telling me what they heard, that would help a lot.

Can somebody explain the home grow rules in plain English

Second post from me and I am afraid it is another beginner question. My son keeps telling me I am allowed to grow a couple of plants at home now, and every time I try to confirm that for myself I end up in a document written for lawyers, or a forum post from someone in another state entirely. What I would like to know is what the actual limits are supposed to be, whether it matters that I rent, and where the reliable place to read this is. I am not asking anyone here to be my solicitor and I would not treat a reply as one. I would just like to be pointed at something official that a person can read. I have a very sunny south window and a lot of newly free time. That is the extent of my qualifications.

Crossing a county line and watching the price change is a whole New York experience

I split my week between here and the city and I have started treating the drive as an accidental economics experiment. Same person, same week, same everything, and the number changes depending on which side of a line I happen to be standing on. Not by a little either. What gets me is that nobody involved seems to think this is strange. Ask about it and you get an explanation about costs and rent and taxes, and fine, but that does not really explain the size of the gap. Does anyone else deliberately time their errands around this? I am not proud of it but I absolutely do.

Every dispensary interior in this city looks like the same Apple Store, why

Professional hazard, I look at rooms for a living. And I cannot stop noticing that a huge number of these places have converged on one identical look: pale wood, white walls, black sans serif type, one plant, everything under glass, lit like a phone store. Once you see it you cannot unsee it. I understand where it came from. If you are a brand new category and you want to look legitimate and calming rather than sketchy, minimal and clinical is the safest possible choice. It photographs well and it offends nobody. But it also means walking into somewhere in one borough feels the same as another, and the neighbourhood may as well not exist. The places I have actually enjoyed being in were the ones that looked like they belonged to their block. Has anyone else noticed this shifting, or are we stuck with the white box for another few years?

every thread about convenience on this site reads like science fiction to me. people complain about a fifteen minute walk. my nearest option is a real drive, and in january it is a real drive with a plan, because if the weather turns i am not making a casual trip for anything. so when a map says there is coverage in my county, sure, technically. coverage and access are not the same word. same thing with delivery, which sounds great until you look at what actually comes this far out. not looking for sympathy, just want it on the record when people talk about how much has been built. some of us are measuring it in hours, not blocks.

Long Island has how many shops? Explain this to me

I do not want a lecture, I want an explanation. There are a lot of people out here. There are a lot of towns out here. And yet what I can find within a reasonable drive is a very short list, and my brother in law upstate has better options than I do, which makes no sense to me on population alone. I have heard people blame the towns, I have heard people blame the paperwork, and I have heard people blame the courts. The city and the rest of the state are having two different conversations

Something I notice constantly on this site and it took me a while to name it. In the city the complaints are about too much: too many places, too much noise, too much of everything within four blocks. Then I scroll to a thread from someone upstate and the complaint is the exact opposite, that there is nothing within an hour and no sign of anything coming. Both of those are real and they produce completely different opinions about whether any of this is working. I think we sometimes argue past each other because we assume the other person is looking at the same landscape we are. I am not sure what to do about it other than say where you are posting from. It changes how I read everything else you write, in a good way.

Four years in, is anyone actually happy with how this was rolled out

Genuine question, not a rant, or at least not entirely. It has been years now and I cannot work out whether the plan was slow on purpose or just slow. I drive all day and I hear the same conversation in the back of the car from people who could not be more different from each other, and the one thing they agree on is that it did not go the way they were told it would. I am not asking whether you like the idea. I am asking whether the thing that actually got built resembles what was promised where you live. My guess is the answer depends enormously on your zip code, which is sort of my point. So: where are you, and does it feel finished to you? Hello. I am a few years into a graduate program in Ithaca and I have been reading this site for a couple of weeks before making an account, which I gather is the polite thing to do. I should warn you about my one annoying habit: when somebody states a number or a rule as though it is settled, I am going to ask where it came from. It is not scepticism aimed at you personally, it is just that I spend my working hours being asked the same thing and it has rewired me. Half the confident claims I have read online this month contradict the other half, so somebody has to ask. In exchange I will do the reading and post back what I find, including when it turns out I was the one who was wrong.

Retired teacher, sixty-two, completely new to this and slightly embarrassed

I taught fourth grade for thirty-one years and spent most of them telling children to stay away from all of this, so you can imagine how it feels to be typing here. My knees hurt, I sleep badly, and my daughter suggested I look into it, and now I have a browser with eleven tabs open and no idea which of them to trust. What I do not have is anybody to ask. My friends either think it is wonderful or think it is a catastrophe, and neither group seems to actually know anything. I am not looking for someone to tell me what to buy.
